New Verified Beef Production Provincial Coordinator for Alberta
August 8, 2007
Eileen Leslie of Medicine Hat, Alta has been hired as the Alberta coordinator for the national Verified Beef Production program. Reporting to Alberta Beef Quality Starts Here, a provincial association comprised of beef industry stakeholders, Leslie is charged with increasing the number of cow/calf and feedlot producers registered with the on farm food safety program.
No stranger to the cattle industry, Leslie's past experience includes working as an animal health technician, operating a cow/calf ranch near Maple Creek, Sask, with her husband, underwriting insurance for farm operations with The Cooperators, and most recently was a livestock marketing coordinator for Pfizer Animal Health.
"I'm very interested in helping beef producers take credit for the good work they already do in regards to food safety," says Leslie, "we owe it to ourselves as an industry to ensure that both domestic and international customers understand our diligence in producing a safe product."
Pat Burrage, DVM and Chairman of Alberta Beef Quality Starts Here adds: "Alberta has been looked upon as a leader in beef production and we're confident that Eileen will continue to drive this program forward. In the fall of 2006, changes were made to the program to simplify the requirements for producers. A number of 'must do' procedures were reduced to 'highly recommended,' resulting in less paperwork, simpler auditing procedures and more flexibility. The program focus remains on food safety – primarily avoiding potential drug residues and broken needles."
